Son of the late John and Mary Hermes, he was preceded in death by sisters, Victoria Urban, Mildred Brunner and Rita Hermes, and by a brother, Raymond Hermes. He was survived by his wife, Mary Patricia Minor Hermes (married on May 3, 1969); sons, John Hermes (Mendy) and Don Hermes (Deanna); daughter, Tricia Lane (Jason); sister, Lucilla Herman; brothers, Eugene Hermes, Clarence Hermes, Dr. Jerome Hermes, Bishop Herbert Hermes and Norbert Hermes; grandchildren; and an extended family of relatives and friends. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. He retired after 44 years with the Scott County, KS, Road Department. His funeral was held on June 15, 2012.
