NOTE: Birthdate on stone reads 1837, however 1850, 1860 and 1870 census list his year of birth as 1827.

Suicide via revolver. His wife had filed for divorce fall of 1874. The article details his tragic story. His death record does not appear on indexes, there was an inquest. Shot himself in the head on the front steps of his former home. His son Charles had been summoned and came in the back door hearing the shot and found his father dead. The date engraved on his marker is incorrect, as is the city cemetery index listing. But he does show up on the Wisconsin Roster of Civil War Soldiers.

Second wife of Samuel. He had married first Caroline nee Culver, 2 children Charles and A. Fowler. He married Caroline's sister Berenice, had 2 sons Joseph and Frederick.

Mustered out 1st Sgt. Nov 1 1865. GAR flag stand Post 52 military grave marker on Ellison family plot.

There's a problem with his birthdate. In the 1860 census of Monticello Twp., Jones Co., IA, Samuel's age is shown as 33. In the 1870 census, of Eau Claire, Eau Clare Co., his age is shown as 48. I have seen comments that the tombstone's inscribed birthdate is incorrect, but I'm uncertain as to his correct birthdate.
