Mrs. Mayer was the daughter and only child of William Henry and Carrie (Frantz) Nauman of Paradise Valley. The story that she enjoyed telling about herself was this: She was born in a bad storm and seemed so lifeless that the attending doctor laid her aside to take care of her mother. Ethel revived, however, and lived for the next 102 years.

She met her husband, Charlie, when she went with her friends to a "street car" amusement park, and he went there with his friends. They were married on 2 Feb 1915 and settled in the eastern part of Scranton, near Charlie's family. Charlie had a barbershop, and Ethel had a bakery.
