There were two John Millers who served in the Revolutionary War from Middleboro, Mass., and they are often erroneously conflated in Internet genealogies. The other, contemporaneous John Miller (40012303) was son of John Miller and Priscilla Bennett and married Zilpah Tinkham. This conclusion is partially based on the proximity of graves and similarity of stones. It's remotely possible that these two simultaneous lines of the Miller name in and around Middleboro, Mass., were related, but no connection has been established, and it appears highly doubtful. (The conflation is naturally appealing to people tracing their ancestry, as the other John Miller of Middleboro was a descendant of Mayflower passenger John Howland.)

John married Sarah Leonard in Bridgewater, Mass., in 1778. They removed to Pomfret, Vt., in 1792.

The parents of this John Miller of Pomfret are known to be John Miller II and Waitstill (Clapp) Miller. That's as much as is known about the origin of this Miller line. Waitstill's ancestry is known and well-documented.

The DAR database erroneously reports the subject's birthplace as Bridgewater. Perhaps this undocumented claim is due to a supposition by a DAR applicant on the basis of war service or marriage vital records. His birth is actually recorded in Middleborough VR.
