Virginia Thorndyke, 94, San Luis Obispo native, passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2005.
A visitation will be held from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, followed by a rosary vigil at Reis Family Mortuary and Crematory of San Luis Obispo. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church of San Luis Obispo with Father Michael Cicinato officiating.
Born Virginia Bassi on Feb. 18, 1910, in Harmony, she attended local schools. She married Roger Thorndyke Feb. 3, 1930, and they had two children, Carol and Nancy. In the early 1950s, Virginia purchased a women's clothing store, the Smart Shoppe. For the next 30 years, she enjoyed waiting on her customers and making lifelong friends. After her retirement, she enjoyed serving cookies to the mailman and working in her garden. In 2002, she moved to Bay Osos Residential Care Center until her passing.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Thorndyke in 1992, and her siblings, Lillie Filipponi, Edna Buffa, Dora Madonna, Lesse Bassi and Louis Bassi.
