Tom was drafted by the Army at the outbreak of World War II, leaving for service on August 14, 1942. He received extensive training as a mechanic before being sent to India. Then China, where he served with the Army Air Force until being returned to the States and discharged in 1946. Tom married Birdeen Brackett before he went overseas.
Following the war, he and his wife moved to Longview, Washington where he worked for Reynolds Aluminum Company, Long Bell Lumber Company, while buying and running an egg business on a small farm in the beautiful valley surrounded by small mountains just off the Columbia River. He later worked for Weyehauser Lumber Company where at the time of his retiring in 1986, he was a chemist in the paper mill.
Tom was a member of the Golden Gloves.
