Fireball was the first foal the we saw being born. We had a lot of horses and ponies and grew up on farms so seeing a birth of a calf was normal, but a foal being born was beautiful.

We named her Fireball, her mother's name was Buttermilk. We moved to KY from FL when Fireball was about 5 months old. My father had sold all of our horses and ponies except 2 foals, Fireball and Prince Albert. We took them to KY with us.

We were in KY for about 6 months and the 2 of them were growing up, we couldn't wait till we could train them. We had all been riding since we were about 4 years old but this would be the first time we got to train our own ponies.

When Fireball was 11 months old we noticed that she was having a problem walking, her left leg was swollen and her flank was looking really bad. The vet came out to our farm and looked her over. He said that her leg was NOT broken but he didn't know what was wrong. I slept in the barn with her putting heat packs on her to try and make her feel better. She had been in a pasture with some cows that we had, the said that maybe she had tried to play with a calf and the Momma cow had hurt her..... he said that he couldn't do anything for her, I got up and went to school, we didn't want to go but it was the last day of school so Mom would not let us stay home.

We got home from school to find out that my parents had the vet come out to put Fireball to sleep. Since he thought she had been hurt by a bigger animal he figured since her leg wasn't broken a bone in her hip must have been broken and there wasn't anything he could do. They had already buried her when we got home from school.

We were upset with our parents, I spent a lot of the summer out at the barn brushing and talking to Prince Albert, he was so lonely, so was I. We both missed Fireball so much. Prince became the best groomed pony around, he was a Shetland and had "fluffy" hair so I would brush him, and of course being a girl I tried to braid his hair. We never did train Prince as he was too small for any of us older kids to ride, we just had him like a pet dog. When we moved from KY back to FL I gave him to a friend who had given us a German Shepherd dog named Sugar. We brought her to FL with us and her her for about 14 years.
