James Riley arrived in Sydney aboard the ship Lord Western on October 3, 1840 as a bounty emigrant with his two sisters, Martha and Ann, from Doohat, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. He was the son of David and Jane Stevenson Riley and was born around 1810. He had 3 brothers, John, Moses and William Riley, and one other sister, Rebecca Jane Riley. James married Eliza Warrington on March 16, 1843 in the St. Laurence church of Sydney. They had 5 children: John, Jane Ann, Martha, James and William Riley.
