Augustus, the youngest son of Reverend Joseph Bailey, went to sea when a "mere lad," receiving as wages six dollars per month and his board. He sailed aboard the schooner Brilliant and the Caroline under a Capt. McFadden (possibly Capt. Alexander McFadden, of Wiscasset and Bath, husband of his half-niece Susan Jane Bailey McFadden), and had completed several voyages before settling in Gardiner, Maine at age eighteen in 1850. There he served a two year apprenticeship to a carriage-maker, and later bought his own carriage business. In 1865 he began a fire and marine insurance business, which he owned for many years. He was on the Gardiner City Council and president of the Board of Aldermen, a director and treasurer of Gardiner High School, and state inspector of prisons. Augustus belonged to numerous civic and fraternal organizations. He was a member of the Universalist Church. Augustus contributed to the care and support of his older brothers Elbridge and Nathaniel, who were unmarried and remained living on the family farm in Whitefield. In 1902, after their deaths, Augustus sold the Joseph Bailey homestead.

Augustus Bailey was married twice. His first marriage, on 16 September 1854, was to Abbie Plummer. They had two sons, Willis H. Bailey and William Harvey Bailey, and were divorced in March 1863.

His second marriage was to Annie C. Theobald on 17 June 1863. Augustus and Annie had three daughters: Julia, Alice, and Annie.
