Ethel Vina Barclay was the first of two daughters born to George Franklin and his third wife, Ella Eudell "Della" Harrison. Della passed away a week after Ethel's sister, Johney Bertine "Bertie", was born. Bertie was left in the care of her maternal grandparents, William and Sarah (Worley) Harrison. About 1903, Ethel's father married Jennie Leach. Sometime before 1910, the Harrison's moved to Oregon, and Ethel lost contact with her sister which was a great heartache to her.

Ethel married John Barber on September 26, 1916 at Onawa, Monona, Iowa. They were the parents of A. Eugene, Grace and Chleo.
