Joel Rushing moved to Illinois from Bedford Co., Tennessee, and lived in Washington Co., Illinois briefly before he purchased land in Perry Co., Illinois. He was a county commissioner in 1846, 1847, and 1848 and was one of founding members of the Grand Cote Baptist Church in 1861. After his first wife Susanna (Haile) Rushing died in 1843 after bearing him eight children (see her bio), he married, second, Sabra Tackett, and later married, third, Martha Y. Wells, 25 Nov 1850.
Martha Wells was born circa 1811 in Tennessee. The 1860 census in Perry Co., IL. shows Martha Wells as the widow of Josiah Wells who died 19 May 1843. She had two children, Adolphus Wells and Sarah Wells, and after her marriage to Joel had a third child, Robert C. Rushing.
In the 1850 census Joel Rushing's occupation was farmer, with property value was $1,000. The cause of his death is listed as paralysis.
His estate file is in Box #363, office of the Circuit Court, Perry Co., IL.
