U.S. Senator. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, in 1927, he was a successful journalist and newspaper writer the St. Paul Pioneer Press, (1927-40). In 1940, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Ernest Lundeen and reelected serving until 1949. After leaving the U.S. Senate, he worked as an executive in the shipping industry until retiring in 1982.
