He married Susanna Harlan Brown on 14 Jul 1783 - they had 6 children: John, George, Thomas Harlan, William, Sarah, and Susan. He served in the American Revolution as a surgeon in Col. Baldwin's Regiment of Artificers. He later serves on the court of common pleas, is appointed a county lieutenant then brigade inspector, he serves as a state senator for Allegheny and Washington counties, serves as a member in the Pa. House of Representatives, and then is elected sheriff. He is said to have died from an injury received when he fell from a horse.
