Asmussen, Johann "John" 1866-1951
Funeral Services Today for John Asmussen. Remsen Octogenarian Dies Monday at 84 Years Old. Death Monday claimed another longtime resident of the Remsen community when John Asmussen, 84, who had lived here more than fifty years, passed away in his home after more than two years of failing health. Mr. Asmussen's health began to fail in the winter of 1948-49 but for several months he was able to be about and make his frequent visits about town. During the past winter his condition became worse, with complications arising which kept him confined to his home and gradually his ailments developed to a serious stage. He was taken more severely sick a week prior to his death during which he was a bed patient. The end came at one o'clock Monday evening. Born in Germany. Born October 2, 1866 in Schleswig-Holstein, near the village of Flensburg, Germany, he was the son of Peter and Louise Asmussen, and with a friend came to this country in 1894.
He settled in the Remsen community and worked as a farm hand first for the late Peter Koch, then for Nick Hansen, for five years. On February 11, 1899, Mr. Asmussen was united in marriage to Agnes Moller, while the two were employed in the Hansen household where the wedding took
place. The couple settled on a farm owned by Mr. Hansen, eight miles north and a mile east of Remsen, operating it as renters for seven years. Then they bought an adjoining farm and lived there for 19 years before retiring and
coming to Remsen in 1925. They built a comfortable home in Sunnyside addition, where the family still lives.
A man of outstanding character and a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, Mr. Hansen was a member of St. Paul's congregation here. His devotedness to his wife and family and his excellent character and nature were his
outstanding qualities and his passing was a source of keen sorrow to the many who enjoyed his friendship.
Survivors. Surviving are the sorrowing widow and five children: William and Oscar, Le Mars; Emil, Neligh, Nebr., and Lilly and Dorothy at home A son, Bernard, died in infancy. He had no brothers or sisters. Funeral Today. The body was at the Moeller funeral home where servicers were held this (Thursday) afternoon at 1:30, followed by services in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church, conducted by the Rev. Paul Wuebben. Pall bearers were Wm Tonsfeldt, Frank Engelbrecht, Herman Schut, Henry Ott, Leonard B. Wevik and Aug. W. Hansen. Flower bearers were Mrs. Wuebben, Mrs. Anna Rohde and Mrs. M. M. Griepenburg. - Remsen Bell-Enterprise, April 26, 1951, page 1.
