John Michael Gutmann was the son of John and Anna Gutmann. He was 42 years old at the time of his death. He was the husband of Lisetta (Lizette) Kirchgessner. His military career covers over a sixteen year span; first enlisting as a private in Co. F. 1st Michigan State Troops, and later Co. G. 4th Regiment, Michigan National Guard, until re-organization to Co. M, 31st Michigan Vol. Inf. His death was from typhoid fever and he passed away at Chattanooga, TN. John was the brother of Elizabeth, Kate, William, and Emily. He was the father of Margaret, John, and Elsie. Three thousand people lined the sides of East Fourth Street on the way to his final resting place. (by Lo Marie)
