This community in and about Middlefield Centre, was shocked and made sad by the sudden death of Jerome Smith which occurred about 4 o'clock, Tuesday morning, November 30, 1909, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Morrison, with whom he has resided for some time. Mr. Smith had been as well as usual on Monday husking corn in the forenoon. In the afternoon he called on a neighbor and wanted to have him put some corn into the barn offering to assist him but the neighbor declined, on returning home he helped with the "chores" as usual, retiring in good health. About 3:30 a. m., his daughter heard him stirring about upstairs, in a few moments he came down bringing a lamp saying he had felt ill a few minutes and could not breath(e) well. His daughter prepared some medicine for him which he took in his hand remarking that he did not think he could swallow it, and sitting down fell backward and was gone. Dr. Gillett, who was called, pronounced organic heart trouble the cause of his death. Mr. Smith was born in the town of Middlefield March 22, 1828, and had always resided there, where he was well known and highly respected. His wife who was Lucinda Judson passed away, July 11, 1903. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. D. A. Barnum and Mrs. Charles Morrison; one son, Elmer Smith, two grandsons, a sister, Mrs. John Pitts of Scranton, Pa. and several other more distant relatives ... Interment in Lakewood cemetery by the side of his wife and daughter." ["The Otsego Farmer" (Cooperstown, NY), Dec. 3, 1909, p. 7, col. 1]
