Mrs. Cyril Chaput, of Miltonvale, and her daughter, Mrs. Ed LaBarge and small daughter, Irene Marie, of Clyde, were fatally burned Sunday at the Chaput home near Miltonvale.
The accident occurred between six and seven o’clock Sunday evening, when Mrs. Chaput and Mrs. LaBarge were preparing to get the evening meal. One of the ladies picked up a five gallon can of kerosene and poured some on the fire in the range. An explosion occurred almost immediately and burning kerosene was thrown all over both of them. Mrs. LaBarge ran into the yard, calling for her father, who was doing the evening chores. Mr. Chaput pulled the burning clothes from her body and Mr. LaBarge, who was asleep in another room, was awakened by their screams and carried Mrs. Chaput and his small daughter from the home.
Both women were badly burned over their whole bodies and the baby was also burned badly. All were rushed to St. Joseph Hospital here, where Mrs. LaBarge died about two o’clock Monday morning. Her small daughter, Irene Marie, fourteen months old, died about five o’clock and Mrs. Chaput lived until about o’clock Monday afternoon.
Mr. LaBarge was burned about one foot and leg in rescuing Mrs. Chaput and Irene Marie, but his condition is not regarded as serious.
Mrs. Chaput, who was 54 years old, is survived by her husband and these children; Eldon, of Aurora; Mrs. Laura Shellman, of Rice; and Alcid, of Miltonvale. Also surviving are two brothers, Frank Boyer, of Concordia and Ed Boyer, of Aurora; three sisters, Mrs. Ed LaBarge of Aurora; Mrs. Fred LaBarge, of Atchison and Mrs. Gibb Zimmer, of Clyde.
Mrs. LaBarge, besides being survived by her brothers and sisters, leaves her husband and one son, Francis Guilmett, Jr. She was 35 years old.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the Catholic Church in Aurora.
