Alois (Al) M. Bartel, age 77, of 16516 Bartel Road, rural Valders, died
early Saturday morning, May 31, 1997, at his residence after a
courageous battle with heart disease.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 1997, at
Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Dr. Dennis Ladwig, President of
Lakeshore Technical College will officiate. Private burial will follow
at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
He was born April 1, 1920, at the home farm in rural Valders, son of the
late Joseph and Theresa Leiterman Bartel. At the age of 24, Mr. Bartel
took over the family farm where he greatly enlarged that project and
increased production. He became a member of the Wisconsin Crop
Improvement Association and produced certified seed grains. In the year
1975, Bartel founded and organized the corporation "Bartel Seed Service,
Inc."
He was a Wisconsin Certified County Fair Judge and did judging at fairs
in the surrounding area. Al served Manitowoc County Fair as
Superintendent for some 15 years, during which he brought many
innovations and improvements to the fair. All served Manitowoc County as
surveyor and reporter through the local A.S.C.S. Office for about 10
years, covering much of Manitowoc County. As a member of Manitowoc
County Historical Society, Bartel rebuilt the Thompson Cabin at
Pinecrest Historical Village. In September of 1990, Bartel was honored
by the Wisconsin Coalition Aging Groups and was presented with an
achievement award.
In 1992, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture recognized Bartel with
an award of appreciation for service as a Farm Credit Advisor. On June
14, 1994, Lakeshore Technical College (LTC) recognized Bartel for his
eight years of continuous service on the LTC Board. Over the years,
Bartel was involved with the Dale Carnegie Course, Elderly Nutrition
Program, St. Nazianz Nutrition Site, the Valders Nutrition Site, St.
Nazianz Lions Club, Wisconsin Department of Revenue and Conservation
Education, Inc. of Manitowoc County.
He married the former Elverna Behnke on May 1, 1948, in Brillion. She
preceded him in death on January 8, 1971.
Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Tom Bartel and Loret
Thill, Madison, Tim Bartel, Milwaukee; five daughters and four
sons-in-law, Betty and Terry Weiland, Menasha, Nancy and Randy Meyer,
Black Creek, Cindy and Ray VanDenElzen, Green Bay, Debby and Tom Umnus,
Appleton, Peggy Bartel and her fiance, Jeffrey Menos, Slinger; two
brothers and one sister-in-law, Tony Bartel, Chilton, John and Virginia
Bartel, Chilton; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Sr. Terese
Bartel, Campbellsport, Minnie Jahn, West Bend, Helen and Jerry Mertens,
Slinger; six grandchildren, Melissa and Trisha Weiland, Kevin and Carrie
Meyer, Amy and Paul Umnus. He was preceded in death by four brothers and
one sister.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the Pfeffer Funeral Home
from 2 p.m. Wednesday until the time of service at 4 p.m.
A memorial scholarship fund has been established at Lakeshore Technical
College.
The family wishes to thank the Holy Family Memorial Hospice and friend,
Leo Steffen, for their special support.
