Melvin was son of Joe E. McCray of Columbia Mississippi and Imogene M. McCray of Chicago Illinois. He enlisted in the US Army on Jul 2, 1965 in Columbia and upon completion of training was ordered for duty in Vietnam. He arrived incountry on January 24, 1966 where he was assigned to and served with A Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Calvary, 1st Calvary Division, USARV.
During Operation NATHAN HALE elements of A Company engaged the enemy in the vicinity of the Dong Tre Special Forces Camp in Phu Yen Province, and during the fire fight two men were killed in action. One of the casualties was PFC McCray who was killed by a hostile explosive device.
