German emigrant from the Rhine Valley
settled in Perry County 1750
relocated one mile north of Belleman's Church in 1752
naturalized 1761 (?)
(monument also in Mogel plot, new cemetery)Valentin Mochel arrived on August 28, 1750, in Philadelphia aboard the ship "Phoenix" (John Mason, master). The vessel had sailed from Rotterdam, stopping in Cowes, England, and carried 339 passengers. He likely came from the Rhine River provinces in the western part of the German Empire. He took the oath of citizenship in 1761.

Valentin first settled in Penn's Vally at Millheim (now situated in the northeast corner of Penn Township in Centre County, Pennsylvania). He took up land, but after being there for some time found the Indians being troublesome, and fearing for his family's safety, he migrated to near Centreport, Berks County, in the vicinity of Belleman's Church, where he took up a tract of land in 1752.

The family name has been spelled Mochel, Mockell, Mockle, Mogel, Mogle, Magle, Mocel, Mokel, Mokle, and Mogul.

According to Daniel Schumacher's baptismal record (Evangelical Lutheran) four-week old Johann Nicolaus Mockell was baptized in Bern Township, Berks County, on August 15, 1756. He was the son of Valentin Mockell and his wife Anna Eva. Another son Valentine was born on January 22, 1758. According to Berks County Biographical Sketches (1898) a third son, Johann Adam, was sent back to Penn's Valley to occupy and cultivate the abandoned land and protect it against the Indians. A fourth son, Casper, was born January 13, 1762.

Valentine Mogul is listed in the 1790 census for Bern Township, Berks County. The household contains three males over 16, two males under 16, and two females.

The Berks County probate records show that Valentine Mochel (Jr.) on April 28, 1795, was appointed administrator of the estate of his father, Valentine Mochel. His mother, Eve (Anna Eva), had declined to serve as administrator. This record confirms his death in 1795, not the date shown on the newer stone placed in front of the original sandstone marker.
