- Pioneer Families of Cleveland, 1914, by Gertrude Van Rensselaer Wickham, available online as a google ebook. See p. 294.
Hayward was elected Mayor of Cleveland in 1843. He was first buried in Erie Street Cemetery, Cleveland, in Section 1, Lot 9. They have an alternate death date in their record of 17 April 1857. The date of re-interment is not recorded. (seekerJay (46998289))
A birth record index suggests he was born in 1810 July 1 in Lebanon, CT, not 1800 as recorded on the stone. The birth record lists parents as John and Eunice. The 1810 date is likely the most accurate, rather than the 1800 date engraved on the more-recent replacement headstone. However, I'm leaving the 1800 date on the memorial, to reflect the gravesite itself.
From Cuyahoga Co., Ohio Probate Records: Will of Nelson Hayward abstracted -

Contributor Bob Toelle (47047332) has located a great deal of information. He has discovered that several reference sources erroneously list Nelson's parents as William and Marjory Thayer Hayward as his parents, when they were actually his grandfather's great-grandparents. The origin of the error appears to be an interpretation of the quotation at the top of the memorial, when someone referencing it assumed the word "progenitors" to mean parents when it did not.
