On Feb. 1, 1926, he married Alverne Colwell in Joliet.
He and his wife farmed in Mazon and Norman Township for several years and they then moved to Washington State where they owned and operated a poultry farm. They returned to Morris in 1975. He enjoyed woodworking.
Mr. Elam was a member of the United Methodist Church in Winlock, Wash.
Surviving are five daughters, Mary (Richard) Connelley of Centralia, Wash.; Ardith (John) McKibben of Albion; Myrtle Rudow of Morris, Lois (John) Snyder of Morris; Barbara (Rondald) Crandall of Vader, Wash.; two sons, Robert (June) Elam of Morris and Paul (Kathy) Elam of Longview, Wash.; 32 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Clara White of Morris; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife on Dec. 11, 1988; one daughter, Rita Wright; two sons David and Richard Elam; one grandson, six sisters and one brother.
