Edward was seated with his 3 year old granddaughter Ruth E. Baxley in her little red wagon under a shade tree. It was not raining, but was overcast when a sudden bolt of lightning hit the tree, killing the grandfather outright. The little girl was taken to the hospital and was dismissed the next day as unharmed. However 4 weeks later on August 11, 1945 she slumped without warning and died. She was the daughter of his son John Baxley and his wife Martha.
Edward and Sallie had triplets born to them, it seems that no one in Harrison County had seen triplets before and when they went to the county fair they were the biggest feature of the day!
