Hungarian aristocrat, motorist, desert researcher, aviator, Scout-leader. (A. k. a. Ladislaus von Almásy.) Almásy served as a soldier in both World Wars--in the Second World War he served Hungary when it joined the Axis powers, and he served with Rommel in North Africa. He was also an early enthusiast for and promoter of the Scouting movement. His life story was also the basis for the novel The English Patient and its 1996 filmed version.
