Prewar planter in Christ Church Parish. Banker, broker in Charleston. Militia colonel. Delegate to SC Secession Convention. Helped raise the Holcombe Legion. Lt. colonel, Holcombe Legion, November 21, 1861. Colonel, October 8, 1862. Led the Legion cavalry. Charge with drunkenness on duty, April 1863. Arrested and relieved of command. On March 18, 1864, the Legion cavalry was reformed into the 7th SC Cavalry. Resigned May 30, 1864 after intentionally disregarding an order from the War Department to take command of another regiment. Said to have quarreled with President Davis. Returned to SC and commanded militia.

Lived in Mount Pleasant postwar. State senator 1865-1867. Often included on postwar lists of Confederate generals, but on his application for a postwar pardon he called himself a colonel.
