Danish Monarch. She received world-wide recognition when she became the Queen of Denmark in 1839, when her husband of 24 years was crowned King Christian VIII. She was the daughter of Duke Friedrich Christian of Augustenburg and Princess Louise Augusta. On May 22, 1815 at the Castle Augustenbory, she married, as his second bride, Prince Christian Frederik, who would become later King Christian VIII. As the queen, she supported several humanitarian issues, such as establishing several orphanages, birthing houses for poor women, and two poor houses. The couple's marriage was viewed as happy, but the couple did not have any children. The successor to the throne was Frederik, a son from Christian's first marriage. As the Queen Dowager, she survived her husband by more than thirty years. As she aged, she spent her winters in the warmer climates of southern Europe. She was a supporter of the well-known Danish Psalmist writer and pastor N.F.S. Grundtvig. A statue of Queen Caroline Amalie is located at the north end of the rose garden of the Royal Garden in Copenhagen.
