Thomas, for some unknown reason, resided in Cleveland, Ohio when the Civil War began. He enlisted for army service as Lieutenant Colonel in the 29th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, November 28, 1861. He was captured, date unknown, and exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Virginia, September 21, 1862. He resigned his commission, June 19, 1863. His name is on Panel #6 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. See www.soldiersandsailors.com for more Monument information.

He and wife, Cordelia, born about 1831 in NH, had two children. The first, Walter T. Clark, was born in Ohio in 1864, presumably in Cleveland. By 1867 they had moved to Campridge, MA where Ida A. Clark was born the same year. No occupation was listed for him there in the 1870 U.S. Census where the family resided in Ward 2. The 1880 U.S. Census shows the family still residing in Cambridge, MA with Thomas working as an officer in the custom's house. The 1890 U.S. Census for Veterans shows Thomas still in Cambridge, residing at 88 Windsor St. but having trouble with his right leg due to war-time service.

Thomas applied for a veterans army pension benefit, Dec. 26, 1897, which was issued as certificate 279669. After his death on August 12, 1894, his Cordelia applied for a widow's benefit, September 8, 1894 which was issued as certificate 502852. Cordelia died in 1902.
