Gardner was born and raised in Salem. He enlisted in the Navy 17 December 1959 at a Boston Recruiting Office, at the age of 17 years and 3 months old.
Gardner arrived in Vietnam sometime in April 1967 and was assigned to H & S Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment,3rd Marine Division. Gardner was assigned as a Corpsman to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
Gardner died as a result of fragmentation and gunshot wounds to the body from hostile grenades and small arms fire, when the Marines engaged enemy forces, at the northwest base of Hill 778 and 12 kilometers west northwest of the Khe Sanh Airfield, during Operation Beacon Star.
The Marines lost 22 men and 2 Corpsman.
Gardner was married and served his country for 7 years, 5 months and 22 days and was KIA #12,104.

Gardner was 24 years, 8 months and 9 days old.
Survived by his wife, Carol Ann Tillson and his 3 sons; Gardner Jr, David Bryan and Michael Scott, all of 27 Salem Street, Salem, Massachusetts, and his parents; Chester Gardner and Helen Caroline Tillson Sr; and 3 sisters; Kristina(2 sisters, names unknown) and 3 brothers; Chester(2 brothers names unknown) of Box 3158, St Andrew Station, Charleston, South Carolina.
Funeral services conducted by Boucher Funeral Home, Inc.

A few weeks after the burial his wife and sons moved back to the Florida area.
