In May, 1801, they with Catherine's sister, Sarah, and husband, Basil Nelson, started for the country then called "The Genesee, western New York". He had been there the fall before and bought 75 acres of land at three dollars an acre, all wood and three miles from anyone. They rented a farm and stayed one year at Oakes Corners [Ontario County NY]. They actually settled in Seneca County NY, in the town/village of Junius.
