WILLIAM J. BRUINS

Monoxide Fatal to W.J. Bruins
Found Several Days After Death.
William J. Bruins, 66, of 710 S. 25th St., was found dead of carbon monoxide
poisoning in the garage of his home about 6 p.m. Thursday.
Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen ruled the death accidental and said that life had
been extinct several days.
The body was found by Edward Karl of 614 S. 35th St., who had been asked by Mrs.
Andrew Bruins, a sister-in-law of Bruins, to check on his whereabouts. Bruins
had mentioned that he planned to go fishing outside the city when eating with
them earlier in the week.
Police theorized that Bruins, who lived alone, had been working on his car in
the closed garage when he apparently became ill and started toward the door. An
extension cord was found tangled around his right leg, indicating that he had
stumbled and fallen near the rear of the car.
The hood of the car was opened and a trouble light had been hooked to the motor,
according to police. Its ignition switch was on but the motor had stopped after
the gas supply ran out.
Bruins was last seen alive Monday evening by a brother, Andrew, at whose home
he took his meals occasionally. A woman reported that she had seen Bruins’ car
parked in the driveway of his home Wednesday evening while on a visit to church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Urbanek and Schlei
Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Blaufuss officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen
Cemetery.
Bruins was born in Holland Jan. 13, 1891, son of Henry and Hattie Van Beck Bruins.
He came to Manitowoc 55 years ago with his parents. He had been employed as a
shipfitter at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc., for 45 years prior to his retirement
in April of 1956. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. ___
in Manitowoc.
Survivors include a brother, Andrew Bruins of Manitowoc, a nephew, Allen Bruins
of Manitowoc, and a niece, Mrs. Donald Brey of Manitowoc.
Friends may call at the funeral home after __ o’clock this Friday evening.
