HALVOR C. HANSON (d. 1939)

Dr. Halvor C. Hanson, a native of this city and a practicing physician in Chicago
36 years, died at his home in that city Sunday. He was a son of the late Thomas G.
Hanson of this city.
Dr. Hanson was honored at one time by King Haakon VII of Norway, being knighted
for outstanding humanitarian contribution over a long period of years. Dr. Hanson
was made a Knight of the Order of St. Olaf by the Norway king for helpfulness to
inmates of Bethesda Old People’s Home in Chicago. For years Dr. Hanson provided
medical attention to the inmates donating time and medical supplies necessary in
attending the patients.
King Haakon, in conferring the rank, also called attention to Dr. Hanson’s keen
interest in Norwegian-American affairs.
Dr. Hanson’s youth was spent here. He was graduated from the old northside high
school and later from Rush Medical college, Chicago. He interned at the Norwegian
Lutheran Deaconess Home and was on the medical staff there ever since. Survivors
are the widow, Laura Haugen Hanson, of Chicago; three sons, Dr. George Hanson and
Thomas of Chicago, Harold of Luther college, Decorah, Iowa; two daughters, Marion
and Katherine of Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. J. A. Johnson, Mrs. Even Tollefson,
of this city, Mrs. Charles Barnstein of Newton, brother Thomas of Chicago.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday evening at eight o’clock from the Bethel
church in Chicago. The body will arrive here Wednesday morning and may be viewed
at the Shimek and Schwartz funeral parlors from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral services
will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. from the grave in Evergreen cemetery, the Rev.
Ernest Zoerb officiating.
