Bio by Loita Hawkinson: Nora was the daughter of August Schmitz and Auguste Dumke Schmitz. Nora was a teacher in the Seattle area until her marriage to widower William Grant Hartranft. William died in 1944 leaving her a fairly wealthy widow. The couple did not have children but they were very active in Kirkland's political and social life.
