HERMAN HENTSCHER

From Der Nord Westen, 25 Nov. 1909:
Death following a long illness on Sunday morning of Hermann Hentscher,
a well-known and highly thought of resident in our city. Mr. Hentscher
was born 82 years ago in Halberstadt, Saxony, and served in the Prussian
army during the stormy year of 1848. He came to America in 1853, and
after a brief interlude in the east, came here to Manitowoc. He didn’t
remain here very long before moving on to Missouri. At the outbreak of
the Civil War he served with a Union Cavalry Regiment for the entire war.
At war’s end, the experienced soldier returned here to Manitowoc where he
has lived ever since, and for years has pursued the profession of a
photographer. In 1867 he married Miss Anna Roeder, his now surviving widow
left to mourn his passing with 2 daughters, Mrs. Albert Hoyer and Mrs.
Albert Schuette. He is also mourned by a sister, Mrs. G. Fehrs here, as
well as a brother living in Brooklyn. The funeral was held Tuesday
afternoon. The local Free Mason Lodge and G.A.R. Post, to which the
deceased belonged, provided him with the final salute in a long procession
of funeral vehicles.
