Wenzel Kadow, Long Active in Business, Dies
Wenzel C. Kadow, veteran insurance and real estate man, died at 5;45 p.m. Wednesday
at his home, 1110 Huron St. Mr. Kadow, 54, has been in ill health the past year.
Head of the Franz-Schmitz-Kadow Co., where he started as an office boy in 1893
and rose to the head of the company and became owner. Mr. Kadow was continuously
active in insurance and real estate in the city for 63 years, when illness caused
him to retire.
Before joining the insurance firm, founded by the late John Franz Sr., in 1875,
Mr. Kadow had been employed by Judge Emil Baensch. He recalled at a testimonial
dinner in his honor at Hotel Manitowoc, on the occasion of his 30th year actively
engaged in business, that he worked the first six month as chore boy without pay.
In 1898 Louis A Schmitz was admitted as a partner of the Franz firm and four years,
Jan. 1, 1900, Mr. Kadow, then 27, became the third member of the company
Becomes Sole Owner
After the death of Mr. Schmitz in 1937 Mr. Kadow purchased the interest of the
Schmitz estate and thereafter operated the business as sole owner. His son, the
late Eugene L., was associated with the firm from 1936(?), until his death in May
of this year. Since then the business has been operated under the management and
direction of his son, Stanley W., formerly of Washington, D. C.
The senior Kadow held membership in the Manitowoc Real Estate Board since it was
founded, serving as its president in 1934, and was an active member of the Manitowoc
Insurance Board. He was a member of the Wisconsin Real Estate Board and the Wisconsin
Association of Insurance Agents. He also was a member of the Catholic Order of
Foresters and the Manitowoc Elks Lodge.
The firm had occupied the same office quarters at 905 S. Eighth St.since the business
was founded by Mr. Franz.
Mr. Kadow was widely recognized as a leader in his field. He gave generously of his
advice and assistance to those who sought his counsel. His office contains many
mementos, plaques and other certifications of recognition and thanks for his services
from insurance companies nad individuals.
As a young man, Mr. Kadow played baseball and devoted much time to bowling.
Born in Manitowoc
The lifetime city resident was born Aug. 3, 1873, son of the late Frank J. and
Pauline Drabinski Kadow. He married Mary L. Peterik Nov. 6, 1901. Mrs. Kadow died
Nov. 26, 1955.
Surviving him are the son, Stanley, a daughter, Miss Eunice M. Kadow, of the city,
three brothers, John M. of the city, George of Denver, Colo., and Max of Milwaukee
and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 11
a.m. at Holy Innocents Catholic Church. The Rev. E A. Radey will officiate and burial
will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Friday where the Rosary will be
recited at 7:30 p.m.
