Dies In Hospital In Australia; Saw New Guinea Action
PFC Ernset Klenke, Jr., 26, who left Manitwooc two years ago to enter the
armed services, died April 11 in a base hospital in Australia, according to
word received by his widow from the War Department Saturday.
Klenke was stricken ill while fighting with his unit in the New Guinea area
against the Japanese several weeks ago.
28th County Fatality
Death of PFC Klenke marks the 28th fatality among Manitowoc county residents
in World War II.
A requiem high mass will be read at St. Joseph's Catholic church at
Kellnersville Wednesday morning at 8:30.
PFC Klenke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Klenke, Sr., was born in 1917 at Maribel.
He was a graduate of the Manitowoc Rapids graded school and also attended Lincoln
high school. Before entering the armed services he was employed at the Manitowoc
Ship Building company.
He left Manitowoc April 20, 1941 and was assigned to Camp Livingston, La. and
later to Fort Devens, Mass. before leaving for foreign service in April, 1942.
On December 29, PFC Klenke married Miss Alice K. Kliment of Whitelaw.
Survivors are the widow; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Klenke, Sr., of Manitowoc
Rapids; two sisters, Mrs. Daniel Peppard of Manitowoc Rapids, Mrs. John Toomey
of Detroit; brother, Henry, of Manitowoc Rapids. His grandparents(sic), Mrs.
Henry Krueger of Two Rivers, also survives.
