JULIA M. KRATZ

DEATH ENDS SUFFERING OF MRS. J. KRATZ
Wife of Fire Chief Had Been Ill for more than a Year
A brave battle against odds that she could never hope to overcome ended for Mrs.
Julia Kratz, wife of Fire Chief John H. Kratz at the hospital at midnight last
night when she calmly fell into sleep never to awaken. The passing of life for
Mrs. Kratz was peaceful and in sharp contrast to the suffering which she had
borne with patience and fortitude for many months, with a knowledge that death
must ultimately triumph over her.
For nearly eighteen months Mrs. Kratz had been a sufferer and for several months
she had been a patient at the hospital, receiving every care but with hope waning
with the passing days. Mrs. Kratz was hopeful and cheerful to the very end and
while her death is a great shock to friends the sorrow is mitigated by the
knowledge that her sufferings are over.
Mrs. Kratz, nee O'Connell, was born at Quincy, Mass., March 10, 1858, being 67
years of age. She was married to John H. Kratz, November 24, 1880 and for many
years the family resided at Muskegon, Mich., where Mr. Kratz was chief of the city
fire department. Later, about 37 years ago, the family removed to Menominee, Mich.,
where Mr. Kratz held a similar position for fifteen years and they then came to
this city upon his election as chief of the local department.
During her residence here and up to the time of her illness, Mrs. Kratz was active
in social and church circles, being a member of the local chapter of the Eastern
Star, the King's Daughters, and of the Ladies society of the Presbyterian church.
Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Hiram Madson of this
city and Mrs. R. O. roffoot of Burlington, Wis. One brother John J. O'Connell of
Chicago also survives.
Funeral services will be held rom the family home at 617 North Sixth street
Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. M.S. Weber officiating. Burial will be
at Evergreen.
