SOPHIA LEVERENZ

Death Sat. morning of Mrs. Carl Leverenz, after a long illness,
of old age debility. The deceased was born Sophie Kansier on
23 Feb. 1825 in Siekow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin and married Carl
Leverenz 25 Mar. 1843. The couple came to America in 1851 and
traveled to Milwaukee via Canada, stayed there about 6 weeks
and then came to Manitowoc where they have lived ever since.
Here they overcame all the difficulties and troubles of the
pioneer life and enjoyed the highest admiration of their fellow
citizens. In March last year the couple celebrated their Diamond
Wedding Anniversary. The inroads of age increased over the last
year until she closed her tired eyes in death last Sat. Her
husband, who celebrated his 81st birthday on 01 May, has suffered
a terrible blow in the loss of his life partner. In addition to
her husband, Mrs. Leverenz is survived by 7 children, namely,
Friedrike Schenk and Mrs. Auguste Falge in Manitowoc, Wilhelm
Leverenz in San Francisco; Mrs. Henriette Staus, Carl, Frank,
and Arthur Leverenz in Manitowoc. The funeral was held in the
afternoon day before yesterday.

SLEEPS IN ETERNAL SLUMBER.
Mrs. Carl Leverenz Ends With Life Work at Age of 79 (sic) Years.
Quietly, peacefully as one falling asleep, Mrs. Carl Leverenz, a pioneer
resident of the city, passed to her eternal rest at an early hour this morning,
death being due to infirmities of age from which the system had become worn out.
In failing health for some time, it was ten days ago that the fatal illness
seized Mrs. Leverenz and since that time the decline had been rapid.
Coming to Manitowoc with her husband in 1851 and having since been continuous
residents of the city. Mrs.Leverenz was one of the well known older pioneers
and her death depletes the ranks of those who assissted in the building of the
city. Sophia Kansier was born at Mecklenburg, Germany, 69 years ago and was
married there March 23, 1843, to Carl Leverenz and eight years later the couple
came to America taking up their home in this city. Mrs. Leverenz was the mother
of eleven children, seven of whom with the husband survive, and it was in the
house that her character and life was best shown. A kind indulgent parent, whose
chief interest centered in her children, she ever sought their happiness and her
memory will be cherished. To the aged husband to whom she had been companion for
sixty-one years the death of Mrs. Leverenz will be a sad blow. A year ago the
couple celebrated their diamond wedding and the occasion was a happy momentous
event in the lives of the couple.
Children surviving Mrs. Leverenz are Mrs. Henricka Schenk, Mrs. Augusta Fulge,
Mrs. Henrietta Stauss, Charles Frank and Arthur Leverenz of this city and William
of San Fransisco, Cal. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon.
