STROKE FATAL TO H. MARTENS; DIES SUNDAY
Retired Business Man Succumbs After Two Years' Illness; Rites Tuesday
Henry Martens, 77, (photo) retired merchant and salesman, and one
of the pioneer grain buyers in Manitowoc, died Sunday at his home,
1107 Marshall street. He had been in failing health for a year.
Two years ago Mr. Martens, while serving on the election board in
the third ward, sustained a slight stroke and was removed to his
home. He never fully recovered from this attack.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Pfeffer
funeral home. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Martens, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Martens Sr. was born in
this city in 1859. As a young man he joined his father, Herman, and
brother, Emil, in the grain business at Tenth and Marshall streets.
In those early days farmers brought products to the city with teams
and the city enjoyed a large grain trade through this source.
Later Mr. Martens entered business for himself, establishing a grocery
store on Washington street, which he conducted for nearly ten years.
Twenty-two years ago he became a salesman for the Grossenbach company,
Milwaukee, a wholesale produce firm with which he continued for 18
years. Four years ago he retired.
June 21, 1882 Mr. Martens married Miss Minnie Haupt. Four years ago
the couple observed their golden wedding anniversary.
Named as a representative of the third ward, Mr. Martens served two
terms on the county board of supervisors. He served more than 25 years
as a member of the election board in the third ward.
Survivors are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Reese Treasure, Chicago,
Mrs. George MacFarlane, city; a son, Herman, Carrington, N.D.; two
sisters, Serena and Ida Martens, city; and two grandchildren.
The body is at the funeral home and may be viewed there until the hour
of the services Tuesday.
