DR. MEANY DIES; FUNERAL RITES TO BE SATURDAY
Dr. J.E. Meany, 81, practicing physician in Manitowoc for over 40 years
and a former city health officer and county coroner, died at the Holy
Family hospital Wednesday afternoon where he had been confined for the
last three weeks. The family home is at 836 Lincoln boulevard.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morninga at 8:30 from the
Pfeffer funeral home and at 9 o'clock a requiem mass will be celebrated
by the Rev. Louis Schorn at the Sacred Heart Catholic church. Interment
will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The body will lie in state at the
funeral home from Friday morning until the time of the funeral.
Born in Ohio
Dr. Meany was born in Steubenville, Ohio, April 20, 1862, the son of
John and Winifred Meany. The family came to Wisconsin in 1866, where
they purchased a farm in the western part of Manitowoc county. He
attended grade school on the lot adjoining his home and spent his boy-
hood on the farm.
In 1880 he finished his schooling in the city of Manitowoc, and was
graduated with a certificate to teach. The next five years were spent
teaching school in the county. After leaving his teaching career, he
was employed in the railroad offices as clerk and agent at Kaukauna,
Wis., and Ironwood, Michigan, for the next six years. Following that
period he traveled two years for a canned goods company.
In 1895 he entered the Milwaukee College of Medicine, now Marquette
medical school, and greduated in 1898. He began general practice in
Manitowoc on June 1, 1898. While in practice he served not only as
coroner and city health officer but was also city physician.
During the years he served as city physician and health officer he
promoted many reforms in the conduct of the department.
Dr. Meany assisted in reorganizing the Manitowoc County Medical society
in 1904, and served as secretary for the next five years. He served as
president in 1912, 1929 and 1936. He was the last member of the original
staff at the hospital, and as a member acted as secretary and treasurer
for two years and taught hygiene and sanitation from 1923 to 1928 in
the nursing school.
In 1940 he retired as general practitioner and limited his work to
surgical anathesia and consultations. The county medical society honored
Dr. Meany and Dr. F.W. Hammond in 1940 at a testimonial dinner marking
42 years they had been engaged in the practice of medicine.
Married in 1901
Dr. Meany was married on June 19, 1901, to Anna Gilbert Dempsey, who
preceded him in death 25 years ago.
He had served as the first grand knight of the local Kinghts of Columbus,
and was made an honorary life member of the council. He also was an
honorary member of the Wisconsin Medical society.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. R.E. Weller of Norwell, Mass., Mrs.
William E. Appleton of Charleston, S.C., Mrs. V.M. Dufeck of this city,
Lieut. Charlotte Meany of the army nursing corps at Camp Grant, Ill.,
and Miss Marion, at home; and two sons, John G. Meany of Des Moines,
Iowa, and Paul Meany of Manitowoc; and five grandchildren.
The rosary will be recited Friday evening by the Knights of Columbus at
the funeral home at 7:30.
