FRANCIS MIKA

Following a long illness Franz Mika, a well-known local resident,
died on Mon. afternoon. He was born in Prague on 01 Aug. 1832 and
came to America in 1854, settling in the northern part of our county.
In 1857 he moved to Manitowoc and operated a produce store here for
many years. When he was in his 60's he began to suffer from an eye
illness which led to his total blindness. After his wife died in
1891, who had accompanied him as he walked our streets, he has been
living with his soninlaw Ernst Wagner here. He caught the grippe
last winter and never completely regained his health. He was a well
educated man and completely at home in German literature. Following
wishes of the deceased, his body was taken to Milwaukee on Tues. for
cremation there.
