Bartley Morris, a farmer in Town Centerville, came to Manitowoc
Saturday to sell a load of barley. About 6 o'clock in the evening
he set out for home. As he approached the railroad crossing on
Calumet Road, a ranger locomotive was going backwards from the
Calumet Station to the Manitowoc Station. Morris believed that he
could cross the tracks ahead of it. The horse made it across but
the wagon was struck by the tender of the locomotive and smashed.
Morris was thrown 30 feet. He was found unconscious and brought to
Holy Family Hospital. An examination disclosed that he had a fractured
skull and severe internal injuries made more serious by his age of 63.
Morris is the father-in-law of Mr. Crowe, one of the operators of the
local "Pilot". Yesterday morning death released him from further pain.
