John Pekarske, Merchant, Dies of Heart Attack
MANITOWOC--John J. Pekarske, 58, veteran clothing store operator, died of a heart
attack at 6 a.m. Friday, at Holy Family Hospital. He had suffered heart seizure
several times in the past several months.
Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m., Monday at Leschke-Bergner Funeral Home and
9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. D.L.Krembs will officiate and burial
will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
For more than 25 years Mr. Pekarske conducted a retail men's clothing business under
the name North End Clothing Store at 10th and Washington Streets. He began the
business shortly after he married Grace Kadow Jan 5, 1922, at Manitowoc and was located
in the former Kapitan Block, razed by fire in 1953 and since rebuilt, at North Eighth
and Buffalo Streets.
He was at this site for 13 years and had been in partnership with Stephen Hobart.
Subsequently the business relationship was dissolved and the Pekarske operation was
moved to Washington street where he opened the store 22 years ago.
Born Aug. 9, 1898, at Newton, son of the late Joseph Pekarske and Monica Leschke
Pekarske, he attended rural schools and was graduated from the South Side High School
here in 1916. A World War I veteran, he served in the armed forces in 1918.
Mr. Pekarske was a member of the chamber of commerce for many years, serving on several
of its committees, of the Washington Street Advancement Assn., Elks Lodge, Optimists
Club, United Name Society, Eagles Aerie(?), and the Drews-Bleser Post of the American
Legion.
Surviving are his wife, two sons, mother, a brother, two sisters, and nine grandchildren.
Friends my call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Sunday where the Rosary will be recited
at 7:30 p.m.
