MATENA TOLLEFSON

MISS TOLLEFSON CITY TEACHER IS STRICKEN
No Warning of Death Which Came to Her On Sunday
Death came without warning of its approach to Miss Matena Tollefson, a teacher
at the McKinley school and one of the oldest teachers, in point of service, in
the schools of the city, who passed away at her home 856 N. Eleventh street
Sunday afternoon. Miss Tollefson, apparently in her usual health, was stricken
while about the home and died within a few seconds. The announcement came as
a great shock to a wide circle of friends and to co-workers of Miss Tollefson
in the schools.
Miss Tollefson attended church services at the Norwegian Lutheran church yes-
terday morning and had prepared the noonday meal at home, and was busy about
the house when she suffered the fatal attack, due to heart trouble.
Teacher for 36 Years
For thirty-six years Miss Tollefson had been identified with the teaching
force in the shcools of the county, most of the time being spent in work in
the city schools. She served as principal of the Madison school and later was
engaged at the McKinley school. She was ex-president of the County Teachers'
Association and served the state association as an officer and had always
taken a prominent part in educational work.

April 10, 1871 and attended the local schools, and then took up the profession
of teaching. She had been at the summer school at the university at Madison
engaged in special work this year and had just started upon her thirty-seventh
year of work as a teacher when the end came.
Three sisters, Mrs. C.M. Jacobson of Chicago, Mrs. S.G. Kelley, of Royalton,
Wis., and Mrs. G.J. Danforth of Sioux Falls, S.D., and two brothers Edward and
Walter in this city, survive. Miss Tollefson and her brothers had made their
home together.
