A metal band has been erroneously attached to Stephen Roberts' broken headstone. The metal band states the following:

San Jacinto Veteran
Private
Chance's Company
(Washington Guards)

A Stephen R Roberts is on record at the Battle of San Jacinto Library & Museum, but he is NOT our man buried here (and our Stephen Roberts here did not have a middle initial). You may read about the Texas Revolutionary veteran at http://www.sanjacintomuseum.org/Library/Veteran_Bios
/Bio_page/?id=1125&army=Texian.

Sons John C. Roberts II and his brother Dr. Henry Ector Roberts had a chain link fence installed around the perimeter of the cemetery @ the late 50s-60s. As is typical to older overgrown grave sights, cattle and deer manage to get in and knock over headstones. Over time, huge trees have died or been struck by lightning and have crushed headstones as they fell.

The pieces of Stephen Roberts headstone were pieced back together, laid flat, held together with cement.

HISTORY OF STEPHEN ROBERTS

Stephen Roberts grew up in Buncombe County, North Carolina. His first marriage was to Jemima Harrison in 1823. Stephen later married his first cousin, Rosannah (his uncle George Roberts's daughter) in 1847 after his first wife died on a trip home from Missouri.
