James Hammond Gardner was the son of Wilbur Sherman Gardner (1835–1909) and Mary Jane "Jannie" (Zerfoss) Gardner (1844–1909).

He spent most of his early years in Iowa, and in his late 20s he was clerking in Howard Miller's Dry Goods Store in Hurdsfield, Wells County, North Dakota. It was there that he met Adella Alice "Della"Harris (1881–1957), and they were married on June 23, 1906 at the farm home of Della's brother Lewis Joseph Harris, about 5 miles southwest of Hurdsfield.

About 1913 the family homesteaded in eastern Montana near Richey, Dawson County, and in late 1920 they moved to Fairview, Richland County, Montana.

In the early fall of 1927, James made his way to California where 4 of his sisters were living. Before winter, his son James Franklin Gardner joined him. The next spring they sent for Della and the 3 younger children, leaving the eldest, Kenneth, who was reluctant to leave his sweetheart.

Known children of James and Della:
~ Kenneth Harris "Ken" Gardner (1907–1999)
~ James Franklin "Jim" Gardner (1908–1993)
~ Roberta Ethel "Bobbie" Gardner (1912–1979)
~ Thurlow Edward "Bud" Gardner (1914–1979)
~ Glen Wilbur Gardner (1920–1977)
