WINSTON-SALEM- Melba Willard Atkins, 85, went to be with her Lord August 11,
2012. A native of Forsyth County, Mrs. Atkins was born August 27, 1926 to the
late Allen Alexander Willard and Shellie Rae Hedgecock Willard. Melba was a
member of First Christian Church and retired from Adams Millis. She played
professional Basketball for Hanes Hosiery for a number of years. In addition to
her parents Mrs. Atkins was preceded in death by her husband Jack Brady Atkins,
twin sister Trelba Smith and younger sister Mary Walworth. Survivors include a
daughter Lynn Hatchell and husband Henry of Washington, NC and a son Craig B.
Atkins and wife Julia of Winston-Salem, four grandchildren Clint Atkins, Lee
Hatchell, Leslie Atkins- Sexton and Laura Tetterton, five great grandchildren
Luke and Jack Hatchell and Brady and Jordan Atkins and Allie Tetterton, two
sisters Ardith Norris of Whiteville and Joann Felker and husband Jim of
Winston-Salem and Florida and a number of nieces nephews and loving friends. The
family will receive friends at 1:00 PM and funeral services will be held 2:00 PM
Wednesday August 15, 2012 at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel. Burial will
follow at Saints Delight Primitive Baptist Church. The family would like to
thank the staff at The Oaks at Forsyth for their loving care of Melba.
