Native of Spartanburg County; son of William Noah Abernathy (1899–1982) and Bessie May Abernathy (1903–1942); husband of Hilda Pettit Abernathy (1922–2006).
Member of Canaan Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, member of the Loyal Workers Sunday School Class, former Sunday School director and Brotherhood director, and former chairman of the Building Committee and the Search Committee; retired from Draper Corp. after more than 44 years of service; and was U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II.
Survivors also include a daughter, Yvonne Tenn; son, Keith Abernathy (1954–2018); sisters, Frances Lee Abernathy Garrett (1922-2003), Thelma Louise Abernathy Sanders (1928–2019), Celeste Abernathy Varner (1933-2003), and Gladys Abernathy Hughey (1937–2016); four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family received friends from 6:30- 8:30 pm, Saturday, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.
Services were held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, at Canaan Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. John Meador, Rev. Harold Wilson, and Rev. Stephen Johnson; burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
