CRASH KILLS AREA MAN
MANITOWOC – The road death Thursday afternoon of a rural Reedsville man pushed Wisconsin's highway fatality count to 1,018 in the closing hours of 1965.

Richard Draheim, 72, of Rt. 2, Reedsville, was injured fatally when the pickup truck he was driving collided with a car just east of Cato on Manitowoc County Trunk JJ, about two miles west of Wisconsin Highway 148.

According to a Manitowoc County Traffic Police account, Draheim was traveling west shortly before 3 o'clock and apparently attempted to turn left onto a private driveway leading to a barn directly across the road from his house. The driver of the automobile, Donald Frish of Rt. 4, Chilton, was traveling in the opposite direction and apparently could not stop his car in time to avoid the mishap.

Fractures Jaw
Frish, 24, suffered a fractured jaw and dislocated hip and was treated at Holy Family Hospital. Two passengers in the truck, both of them Draheim's grand-daughters, were injured, one of them seriously. They are Karen M. Draheim, 16, who was treated at the scene for face lacerations and Susan F. Draheim, 12, who suffered a cerebral concussion and cuts to the forehead. Susan late Friday morning was pronounced in serious condition at Memorial Hospital, where she was conveyed after the mishap by ambulance.

Both girls are daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Draheim, Rt. 2, Reedsville. The girls and their grandfather were returning from a feed mill in the Town of Collins. The trio was going to place a load of feed that Draheim had bought in the barn.

Dr. Theodore A. Teitgen, Manitowoc County coroner, said the senior Draheim died of crushed chest injuries. He said an inquest will be scheduled but no autopsy will be performed.

Highway Wet
Police said the two-lane highway on which the accident occurred was wet and that the atmosphere was hazy. Following the collision, Frish's car overturned and rolled into the ditch pinning the driver. The truck remained upright in the roadway. Both vehicles were wrecked.

Draheim was the 15th person to die in Manitowoc County this year as the result of a road accident. In 1964, Manitowoc County recorded a total of 24 highway deaths, the last one occurring Dec. 28.

Draheim was born July 31, 1893, in the Town of Eaton, son of the late William and Hulda Zahn Draheim. He married Elfrieda Gierke June 3, 1916, and the couple farmed in the Town of Eaton until 21 years ago and then located in the Town of Cato. He had served on a township school board and had been a member of a church board.

He is survived by his wife; five sons, Elroy of Two Rivers, Elmer of Rt. 4, Chilton, Wilber of Lansdale, Pa., Allan of Manitowoc and Harvey of Rt. 2, Reedsville; a brother, Carl of Sheboygan; a sister, Mrs. Selma Meyer of Sheboygan; and 15 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Faith Lutheran Church, Valders. The Rev. Robert Onkka will officiate and burial will be in Our Savior Cemetery, Valders.

Friends may call at Christianson Funeral Home, St. Nazianz, after 3 p.m. Saturday until noon Sunday and then at the church.
