John Fortune was born in Wexford County, Ireland in 1830 and is the son of David & Ellen Fortune of Ireland. He remained with his parents until 17 years of age, when he went to Quebec, Canada. Soon after he went to Rochester, NY, remaining there 5 years. then to California for another 5 years (Gold Rush). Back to NY then to Missouri for 40 years, then to Kansas in 1896 (North of St. Paul).
He married Margaret Caufield. David, James E., John T., and William were their children. Sometime after Margaret's death he married Mary Alton. To the union three children were born: Mary Ellen, now Mrs. William Hosey, Eugene Thomas and Lestie. David and John preceded their father to the other world. All the other children were present at the funeral.
