Army veteran worked for Labar's Trucking
David L. Derr, 80, of Rosewood Apartments, Berwick, went to be with his Lord and Savior early Wednesday morning, Aug. 22, 2012, at the home of his daughter, Tammy, in Berwick under the loving care of his family.
Born in Berwick on Dec. 13, 1931, a son of the late Roy and Emmaline Kishbaugh Derr, he graduated from Nescopeck High School in 1950. He joined the Berwick National Guard in 1949 and served with the U.S. Army for 3 1/2 years with 6 1/2 months in Germany. He attended Penn State for 2 1/2 years studying forestry management. He was employed by United States Radium, Almedia, and for 19 years at Labar's Trucking.
He was a lifelong member of Albright United Methodist Church, Nescopeck, until its closing in 2010. He then became a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Nescopeck. While at Albright, he had served as lay leader and bell ringer.
Preceding him in death were his wife of 46 years, the former Audrey A. Beck, July 21, 2001; grandson, Jason LaWall, Jan. 11, 2000; brothers and sisters: half brother, Harry Hunsinger; Eugene A. "Gene" Derr, Dec. 23, 2009; Ray E. Derr, Nov. 30, 2010; and Mary Alice Schmidt, Jan. 16, 2011.
David will be remembered by his children: Debra LaWall and husband, Timothy, Wapwallopen; Sharon Burd and fiance, Ken Opie, Nescopeck; Tammy East and husband, Frank Jr., Berwick; David R. Derr, Austin, Texas; three grandchildren: Brian LaWall, Zachary and Jacob East; sisters: Ida Mae Sitler, Berwick; Patrician Karchner and husband, Ray, Zenith; Donna Kacyon and husband, Larry, Towanda; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Hunsinger, Nazareth; Dora Derr, Nescopeck; many nieces and nephews; and his companion of nine years, Betty Tyrell, Berwick.

Entrusted to the care of the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, where services will be held on Saturday at noon with the Rev. Rodney Miller, his pastor, presiding. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick. Calling hours on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.
